A babymoon maternity photoshoot in Barcelona: Jaja

Jaja's maternity photoshoot was part of her babymoon in Barcelona. We planned a solo session with two looks and divided the route into two parts. We began among the historic stone streets of the Gothic Quarter and continued in the greenery of Parc de la Ciutadella.

As a pregnancy photographer in Barcelona, I plan the sequence of locations, walking distances, light and time for breaks in advance. During the session, I guide every pose, suggest natural movements and keep the pace comfortable.

A solo maternity photoshoot during a babymoon

A babymoon is a trip taken before the baby arrives. Adding a photoshoot to the itinerary creates a personal record of this stage of pregnancy and the destination itself. A solo session works particularly well for expressive maternity portraits, outfit details and close-up photographs.

Jaja received all the posing guidance as we worked. We started with simple standing positions, gradually added movement and changed the direction of her body and gaze. Once she felt comfortable in front of the camera, we moved on to closer portraits.

The first look in the Gothic Quarter

We started the photoshoot near Barcelona Cathedral. Jaja's white draped outfit looked beautiful beside the warm stone, carved portals and tall Gothic windows. I photographed the first full-length portraits here, giving the shape and movement of the dress plenty of space in the frame.

We then entered the courtyard of Casa de l'Ardiaca. I used the fountain as the centre of several compositions and photographed Jaja from different angles, including portraits beside the water and under the arcades. The upper passage added old stone balustrades and architectural details from the area surrounding the cathedral.

Along the narrow streets, we continued with walking portraits. Jaja moved slowly beside the stone walls, paused near old doors and turned towards the available light. We made several photographs near Pont del Bisbe before continuing towards the large wooden portals and stone steps.

How I guided the posing

During a maternity photoshoot, I alternate between full-length photographs, mid-length portraits and close details. This creates a varied story while keeping the session flowing naturally.

For some photographs, Jaja kept her arms relaxed or lightly touched the fabric of her outfit. Other poses used a gentle turn of the shoulders, support from a wall or a few slow steps towards the camera. I photographed her hands and baby bump later in the first part of the session, once she was fully comfortable with the process.

The seated portraits beside the wooden door and on the stone steps also created natural opportunities to pause. For each position, I selected an angle that showed the silhouette, the draping of the outfit and the direction of the light.

Why bring two outfits to a maternity photoshoot?

Jaja's first look featured an ivory draped top and a long skirt. The asymmetric neckline, long sleeves and visible baby bump gave the outfit a sculptural shape that worked beautifully in portraits and full-length photographs.

For the second part, she chose a fitted dress in a cool pastel shade. Its clean silhouette complemented the glass facade of L'Hivernacle, the surrounding greenery and the pale stone of Cascada Monumental.

Two outfits work especially well for a longer babymoon photoshoot in Barcelona. One look can include stronger shapes and more styling details, while the second can feel lighter and easier for walking. I include changing time in the schedule and select a practical place for it along the route.

The second part in Parc de la Ciutadella

We began the next part at L'Hivernacle, the historic greenhouse in Parc de la Ciutadella. Its glass facade and slender metal structure gave the photographs clear, elegant lines. Inside, we used the diffused light, plants and wooden seating for relaxed portraits and a few photographs taken through the glass.

We then continued near Cascada Monumental. The steps, balustrades and terraces offered several perspectives within the same area of the park. I photographed Jaja beneath the trees, beside the ivy-covered arches and along the stone railings.

We finished the session with a wider view of the cascade. These final photographs clearly show the Barcelona location while keeping Jaja at the centre of the composition.

How I plan a comfortable pregnancy photoshoot

Before the session, I ask what walking pace feels comfortable, how long the mother-to-be would like to stay on her feet and how frequently she may want to pause. I then create a route with short transitions, places to sit and a suitable option for changing outfits.

For a summer maternity photoshoot in Barcelona, I recommend a time with a comfortable temperature and carefully consider the direction of the light. I include shaded parts of the route and prepare an alternative order for the photographs in case a location becomes busy.

Before the photoshoot, I also help coordinate clothing, footwear and accessories. Water, a second outfit and a small makeup kit are usually enough to bring. I take care of the locations, timing and direction throughout the session.

Can I have a maternity photoshoot without my partner?

Yes. Jaja's session was created entirely as a solo maternity photoshoot. I guided each part of the process, allowing her to focus on the experience and enjoy this moment during her trip.

A partner or children can also join for part of the session. In this case, we can plan a family photoshoot in Barcelona and reserve separate time for individual maternity portraits.

What happens if the planned location is busy?

I assess the surroundings throughout the photoshoot. Sometimes changing the order of the photographs or beginning on a nearby street solves the situation immediately. We can continue with another part of the route and return to the original location a little later.

This keeps the session moving smoothly and allows the mother-to-be to enjoy the experience without worrying about crowds or backgrounds.

It is best to contact your photographer as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. This gives us time to choose a suitable hour, coordinate the outfits and plan the route around the season.

Every pregnancy and travel schedule is different, so personal comfort and medical advice should always guide the final date.

Jaja's photographs show how varied a solo maternity photoshoot in Barcelona can be. Two carefully coordinated outfits, a comfortable route and clear posing guidance created a complete story across two distinctive parts of the city.
